Retailers, Traders & Manufacturers: Picking the Right B2B Layer to Target
"Retail," "trade," and "manufacturing" get used loosely, but they're three different points in the supply chain — and your product usually fits naturally into just one or two of them.
Manufacturers: makers of the product
Buy raw materials, machinery, and industrial services. Bulk purchasing, longer relationships, and typically the highest-value accounts once landed.
Traders: the middle layer
Buy in bulk from manufacturers to resell to retailers or other businesses. Good targets for wholesale suppliers, trade finance, and logistics providers.
Retail shops: closest to the end customer
Smaller individual orders but the largest number of potential accounts. Best for suppliers who want volume through many small, frequent-reorder relationships.
Practical tip: if you're not sure which layer fits, ask yourself: do I sell in bulk to businesses who resell (target traders/manufacturers), or do I sell smaller quantities repeatedly (target retail)?
